 Course Description

The Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center Annual Conference will provide a forum for information exchange among clinical/medical, educational, and community providers and consumers.  The conference will provide empirically based information regarding the state of the field and best practice applications relevant to the audience and pertinent to the area of early screening and intervention in autism spectrum disorders. 

Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

1) Identify unique early identification and intervention issues relevant to individuals with an autism spectrum disorder.

2) Explain programming goals for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder during an early intervention.

3) Discuss services and efforts designed, and options available, to facilitate the bridging and collaboration of medical, educational, and community services for the benefit of young children with an autism spectrum disorder and their families. 

Accreditation Statement

For Physicians:  Indiana University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

For Psychologists:  The Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Section of Psychology, is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Section of Psychology, maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Designation Statement 

For Physicians: Indiana University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTMPhysicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

For Psychologists:  The Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Section of Psychology, is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Section of Psychology, maintains responsibility for this program and its content.  3.5 CE credits can be earned at this continuing education activity.  Full attendance at this program is required to receive credit, per APA policy.  CE certificates will be mailed to requestors after the conclusion of this conference.  Please note this CE credit is for psychologists only.

For Educators:  The Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, is approved by the Indiana Professional Standards Board as an eligible sponsor of programs awarding Certification Renewal Units (CRU) for educator license renewal in Indiana.  This conference provides 3 CRUs for full day attendance.  Please pick up your CRU certificate at the conclusion of the conference from the registration table.

For Nurses, Social Workers, Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Mental Health Counselors, and anyone needing an attendance certificate:  The Indiana University School of Medicine is accepted as a provider of approved continuing education.  Please use the physician's credit statement as a guide and request a CME certificate, if either a certificate with accreditation or a certificate of attendance is needed.  Please pick up your CME certificate at the conclusion of the conference from the registration table.  Verification of the acceptance of a CME certificate by outside agencies is the responsibility of the registrant.

Keynote Speaker

Rebecca Landa, Ph.D.,  is the Director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) and the REACH research program at Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is also an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Landa received her BA in Speech Pathology and Audiology summa cum laude from Towson State University, and went on to obtain a summa MS in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Penn State, followed by a PhD at the University of Washington in 1985. She pursued postgraduate work at the University of Maryland, Washington State College of Veterinary Medicine, and Johns Hopkins, and worked extensively as a speech-language pathologist before joining the Hopkins faculty in 1989. Dr. Landa is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and reviews the Autism Society of America Foundation's grants. She serves on both the Maryland State Department of Education Autism Task Force, the First Signs Clinical Advisory Board, and the Working Committee on Brain Growth Factors in Autism at NINDS. Dr. Landa is a recipient of the National Institute of Mental Health's Shannon Award for excellent and innovative research design and content, the Rita Rudel Prize for Research in Developmental Neuropsychology, and the Maryland Speech-Language-Hearing Association's prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Field.of Psychiatry; Chairman, Department of Psychiatry; Director, Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; and Senior Consultant, The Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center, Indiana University School of Medicine.

All others - $100.00

IUSM DOP Staff only (nurses, therapists, social workers, etc) - $50.00

Registration fee includes breakfast, break, lunches, certificate of credit/attendance as requested, and all conference materials.  Parking is free.
