Welcome from the Vice-Chair for Education

Education is highly valued at Indiana University School of Medicine, and so it is not surprising that it is equally valued within the Department of Psychiatry. Our department is involved in teaching throughout the School, and our teachers work throughout the host campus - Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis - as well. Our faculty have traditionally presented segments of others courses, such as sessions on mental health law (School of Law in Indianapolis), the biology of mental health and disease (College of Arts and Sciences), and the use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Diseases in counseling (School of Social Work). We have taught Occupational Therapy and Nursing School students. We participate in all four years of the medical student curriculum. We have a four-year, ACGME-accredited residency in general psychiatry and in various subspecialty areas such as Addiction, Child & Adolescent, and Geriatric Psychiatry. We host an APA-accredited Internship in Clinical Psychology. We have a highly active Continuing Medical Education program, including 32 Grand Rounds presentations each year and several symposia that draw participants not only locally but nationally and internationally. The Neurobiology Graduate Program is another area in which our Department has been and continues to be highly active.

Over the years, our faculty members have written or edited books and scientific articles on medical education, as well as producing original research in nearly all of the psychiatric disorders. We have a position within the department devoted to faculty education and enhancement, since we understand that medical education changes and does so rapidly.

We welcome all of those who attend our various educational offerings and we hope to learn from you even as you learn from us. Please feel free to contact me or our Education Office whenever we can be of help.
