The Department of Psychiatry has been an integral part of the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) since 1940. As part of the nation's second largest medical school, the Department of Psychiatry is Indiana's major center for research on mental disorders.  Researchers in the Department of Psychiatry have made a number of discoveries that have significantly contributed to the understanding and treatment of addictions, mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, Autism, and Alzheimer's disease.

The Department of Psychiatry continues to build upon its rich tradition of research and discovery in preclinical and clinical psychiatric research.  Cutting edge investigations in a wide array of therapeutic areas are supported by federal grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, Drug Abuse, Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and Aging.  Department of Psychiatry faculty also have an extensive track record of successful partnerships with the pharmaceutical industry to test and refine new treatments.
