Program Overview

The Indiana University Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program is an accredited program that has developed into an integral part of the School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry. The medical school has offered psychiatry services for children and adolescents and trained students and physicians in child and adolescent psychiatry for over 50 years.

The fellowship program in its present form was organized in 1958 by Dr. James Simmons and is the only one of its kind in Indiana. The program prepares physicians for the certification examinations in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. Dr. David Dunn chairs this section and directs the Child Psychiatry Fellowship and is also the Arthur B. Richter Professor of Psychiatry.

Since 1960, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program has been approved by the Liaison Council for two years of training in the subspecialty of child and adolescent psychiatry. The program is approved for a total of eight fellows. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry faculty's primary mission is teaching undergraduate and graduate physicians in these major areas:

1. The delivery of humanistic patient care supported by a scientific knowledge base.

2. Fundamental knowledge in child development and psychopathology; and

3. Techniques of diagnosis and treatment which are unique to child and adolescent psychiatry.

Physicians being trained in this program will become knowledgeable about research methodology and will be strongly encouraged to participate in research activities under faculty supervision.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program envelops a comprehensive curriculum of clinical service, research, observation, diagnosis, individual and group supervision and participation in didactic seminars. Residents also are offered a wide range of teaching and research opportunities in areas such as neurobiology, psychotherapy, moral development, psychopharmacology and education.
