Letter From the Chief Residents

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website to learn more about our program and department. As the Chief Residents for the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine, we are certainly proud of our training program. We invite you to consider IU as you look towards your own career path in planning for residency.

The Department of Psychiatry is located in the newly built Neuroscience Center of Excellence. This state-of-the-art building also houses the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychology, Neuropsychology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neuroimaging, and a robust list of other specialty services. Beyond sharing close physical proximity with these departments we are involved in multi-disciplinary efforts to provide patient care and pursue research endeavors. We intend to continue expanding our collaborative efforts in the years to come.

Our training program is enriched by access to a variety of clinical sites with unique patient populations. We partner with University Hospital and Methodist Hospital, two academic, acute care, tertiary centers, Riley Hospital for Children, the Indianapolis Roudebush VA Medical Center, and the Eskenazi Health System. Such varied training sites allow us to gain experience caring for patients from diverse backgrounds and permit exposure to an array of psychopathology. Each of these training sites are within walking distance of one another; the exception is Methodist Hospital, which is 1.7 miles away and is accessible by our free intercampus monorail system known as the “People Mover.”

We are surrounded by extraordinary faculty who have a vested interest in our education and in the success of our program.  Likewise, our residents routinely go on to desirable general psychiatry positions or competitive fellowship training in all areas of psychiatry nationwide. Our department currently offers fellowship training in Addiction Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and we are currently exploring the addition of other fellowship opportunities. Our categorical psychiatry residency is structured in such a way that the fourth year of our program is elective-driven; each resident is given the opportunity to tailor their training to meet their interests and professional goals.  Our program leadership is supportive in helping us pursue our interests. This has led to the creation of several specialized learning tracks: the clinician-educator track, the global health track, and the research track. In keeping with this there are also independent study options.

In visiting our program you will find a very enthusiastic group of residents with diverse backgrounds and interests. We take pride in our camaraderie and are lucky to enjoy frequent social events, which include the annual resident retreat (2 ½ days off service with faculty coverage of the hospitals), movie nights, and weekly resident business meetings. Indianapolis has much to offer in terms of culture, entertainment, and recreation; our restaurant scene has recently drawn national attention. Professional football and basketball teams, a minor league baseball team, a hockey team, a soccer team, the largest half-marathon in the U.S., and the world renowned Indy 500 leaves us with much to do.  Indianapolis is home to the Eagle Creek Reserve and is a short drive from a variety of State Parks and other opportunities to enjoy nature. We would love for you to come and see why we love our home here in Indy!
